The Palm Trees are Really Cool: Onboard the Carnival Valor’s Southern Route (Part Four and a Half)featured

Before I move past the Puerto Rico part of this review and fully into the cruise portion, I want to take a step back and answer a few questions I either had before we traveled or I’ve seen in threads while doing my research for this trip.

Should I rent a car?

No need! It’s super easy to get around via taxi, on foot and with the free trolley. The streets are very narrow and congested around Old San Juan, and there isn’t much street parking.

Can I walk from the Caribe Hilton area/Condado to OSJ?

Probably, but you don’t really want to. The cab ride is cheap and the walk is a bit long and through some quasi-sketchy areas. Also, it’s hot in Puerto Rico. And humid. And you’ll be more comfortable in a cab.

Did you feel safe in Puerto Rico?

Up until that last afternoon on the trolley, absolutely. As with any city, you’ll want to exercise caution. Always be alert, always be careful with your handbags and valuables, always put your bags and valuables towards the inside of the trolley.

Do they speak English in Puerto Rico?

They sure do.

Are there grocery stores or a Wal-Mart/Target I can hit before I embark the ship?

We didn’t see any in OSJ, but there is a CVS right across the street from the pier where you can pick up water, soda and snacks. Selection is limited, but most major brands are represented. Also, if you’re traveling from the airport to OSJ or Condado, you’ll pass a sign that says Target with the Target logo. It’s a car rental place, not a big box store. There probably is a Wal-Mart or Target somewhere in San Juan, we just didn’t find it. Or really look for it because we didn’t need it. You likely won’t, either.

How easy is it to use the free trolley system?

Stupidly easy. That said, you’ll still want to print a map or bookmark the stops on your phone before you leave for easy access.

Como le encanta la gasolina?

Dame mas gasoline
